As I reflect on the unforgettable Vishu celebration held at the Indo American Cultural and Religious Foundation in Phoenix organized by the Kerala Hindus of Arizona (KHA), the memory that stands out the most is not just the vibrancy of the festival itself but the profound impact of one individual: Pazhayidom Mohanan Namboothiri, a culinary maestro whose life story is as rich and inspiring as his dishes. This April 13th was not just about celebrating the Malayalam New Year; it was a day that celebrated life’s second chances and the transformative power of literature.

Pazhayidom, renowned for his exceptional culinary skills, was in charge of the sadya, the traditional feast that is an integral part of Vishu. His journey to this moment is as flavorful as his dishes. Months before the event, when KHA announced Pazhayidom’s participation, Safari channel featured him in their series “Charithram Enniloode.” Here, he shared a poignant episode from his early years — a time of struggle so profound that he contemplated ending his life. The turning point? A serendipitous encounter with a magazine serializing M T Vasudevan Nair’s novel “Randaamoozham.” Captivated by the narrative, he decided to postpone his drastic decision until he finished the novel.
